My husband and I were shocked to find no bread on the shelves and so we decided we wanted to make bread. We didn't have any yeast at home and so we decided to do some research. We found that we didn't need to have pre-brought yeast for sourdough bread and so we decided we would give that a go.
Sourdough Starter
First we had to make a sourdough starter. A sourdough bread starter recipe allows you to make bread by growing your own yeast! You can make one by collecting natural yeast that is in the air. Here is a link to the recipe we followed: https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/sourdough-starter-recipe If you can, take pictures and upload them on this post, let us know how you are going. Write a sentence to comment on what has changed to your starter, what have you found challenging or what have you enjoyed about this process. If you can't comment online keep a record on some paper to share with us when we are back at school. Good luck! We look forward to hearing all about your bread making! Enjoy, the bread is delicious and won't last very long at all!
Give your starter a name! What did you name your Sourdough starter and why? My husband and I both made a starter and so we named them, Joe and Zoe. They are the 'Dough Bros'! We liked that those names rhymed with dough. Did you spot the Kawakawa plant in the glass jar? ;)
Once your Sourdough starter is ready follow the recipe below and see how your first loaf goes: https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/basic-sourdough-bread-recipe
The picture on the right was the second loaf we baked. There are also lots of simple recipes you can follow to use up your 'discard'. You will know what I mean by that when you start making your bread. Share some of the food you have made with your sourdough discard!
Here's another loaf we just baked with feta, olive and sunflower seeds!
This loaf was delicious, I definitely recommend adding these extra ingredients!
Hi Room 13! Hope you have been baking some yummy food! Here is a picture of some cinnamon rolls we made with our sourdough starter. We had to wait for the dough to rise, then we spread on the cinnamon mixture and rolled them up, we cut them to size and then had to wait for them to rise some more!! After a few hours it was finally time to bake them. I don't have a picture of them baked because they went too fast ... whoops. Happy baking whaanau!! :) Sending you lots of love, Whaea Tavoi
Do you have a recipe of something you have baked that you can share with us? Post it here in the comments.
